Gonzaga Team's Jet Avoids Collision at LAX

A private jet carrying the Gonzaga University men’s basketball team narrowly avoided a serious runway incident at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) last Friday. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into the event, which could have resulted in a major collision between two aircraft.

The near-miss occurred when a plane operated by Key Lime Air, holding the Gonzaga basketball team, was instructed by air traffic controllers to halt before crossing a runway. At the same time, a Delta Air Lines flight was taking off from the same runway. A plane-spotting livestream captured both video and audio of the tense moment, where an air traffic controller urgently repeated the command to “stop, stop, stop.”

FAA Investigates the Incident

According to the FAA, Key Lime Air Flight 563, an Embraer E135 jet, was directed to hold short of the runway to allow the Delta flight to safely take off. However, the Embraer proceeded past the designated hold bars, prompting immediate corrective action from air traffic controllers.

“The jet never crossed the runway edge line,” stated the FAA in a press release, emphasising that quick intervention from the controllers prevented the situation from escalating.

The Key Lime Air flight stopped immediately upon receiving the directive and resumed movement only after it was deemed safe. Thankfully, no injuries or damage were reported from the incident.

The dramatic moment was caught live by a plane-spotting livestream, a popular hobby among aviation enthusiasts. Viewers witnessed the near-miss unfold, with the audio of air traffic controllers issuing urgent commands adding to the intensity.

“Stop, stop, stop,” the controller can be heard saying, as the Embraer approaches the runway where the Delta flight was accelerating for takeoff. The Key Lime Air pilots promptly followed the instruction, averting potential disaster by stopping in time.

Gonzaga Team’s Unaware Bystanders

The Gonzaga men’s basketball team was en route to Los Angeles for their game against UCLA on Saturday. Fortunately, team members aboard the private jet remained unaware of the situation until after it was resolved.

In a statement issued on Monday, Gonzaga University acknowledged the incident:

• “We understand that the incident at LAX is under investigation and we will review this information as it becomes available. Our team members aboard the aircraft were unaware of the situation as it occurred, and we are grateful that the incident ended safely for all.”

The team’s game against UCLA, held at the new Intuit Dome—the home of the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers—ended in a close defeat, with the 19th-ranked Gonzaga losing 65–62 to the 15th-ranked Bruins.

Responses from Key Stakeholders

Key Lime Air, the operator of the Embraer E135 jet, has not yet responded to media inquiries about the incident. Similarly, Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) referred questions to the FAA, which is now conducting a thorough investigation to determine what went wrong.

Delta Airlines, whose flight 471 was taking off during the event, stated that their operations remained unaffected.

• “Delta Flight 471 operated as normal, and we are not aware of any communication from the FAA regarding this flight. We are cooperating with aviation officials on their investigation,” said a Delta spokesperson in an email.
